Mr H's Story

Mr H's top priority was to carry on his passion for music by attending a related college course, he was successful at securing a place and continues to attend college and enjoy his passion.

Mr H is a young man living in supported accommodation

We have worked with him to set his personal goals based on his strengths. His top priority was to carry on his passion for music by attending a related college course. His mother was very protective and had been influential in choosing his accommodation which she regarded as ‘very secure’. She was, understandably, extremely nervous about him.

Her desire to keep him safe was actually hindering some of his goals: she wanted to stop him from attending college. We met with the mother and explained his aspirations and our approach to risk. Together, we developed a plan that was agreed with Mr H, his mother and social worker. This was to escort Mr H to and from college with the aim of supporting him to ‘learn’ the bus route to eventually do this independently. We have built in monitoring and feedback to Mum to provide her with the assurance that Mr H was safe and progressing.

Mr H continues to attend college and enjoy his passion. His mother has seen the progress he has made and is more supportive of him taking on new challenges.
